Today we are looking at another piece from India. This sculpture is one of the most popular religious images in India. The armed Shiva is holding a battle ax in one hand and a deer in the other. Then Shiva holds a citron in his lower left hand while his lower right hand is raised. This hand position represents the gesture that decreases fear. Shiva’s wife holds a lily in her hand. Between Shiva and Parvati is their son. He is an infant. He holds a lotus in his right hand. On the lower corner, there are four rings. These rings allowed the sculpture to be secured to a platform. This addition was so they could bring the statue to precessions. The detail this sculpture holds is incredible. Everything in the piece holds meaning, and every detail is important to the overall general concept of this piece. Detail is what makes a piece of artwork truly impressive.
