Coinage

Well, here you are again, reading another blog about one of the most successful creations of past time. Today, we are talking about coins. Coins were devised as a method of payment around the sixth or fifth century BCE. However, there is still to this day much debate over who was the first to mint said coins. According to Herdotous, coins were first invented by Lydians, yet Aristotle asserts that the first coin was created by Demodike of Kyrme, the wife of King Midas of Phrygia. Though there is another theory that says the first coins were issued on the Greek island of Aegina. Either way, coins were a great invention, and the idea slowly spread to surrounding areas though it took some places longer to catch on than others. For example, Romans did not start minting coins until 326 BCE. Some of the most captivating coins of the ancient age are said to have been created by Samudragupta, who depicted himself as both a conqueror and a musician. Other beautiful examples of coinage are the coins of Kos which existed from the 2nd to the 1st century BCE. They are said to of depicted the head of Apollo on one side and a five-stringed lyre on the other. The lyre, a stringed musical instrument played by the ancient Greeks, also appeared on the coins of Thespiai. Many consider coins to be a form of art because of the amount of time and detail that go into creating them. Many rulers used coins as a way to advertise themselves or something that may have been important to their community. Well, that is all folks, catch you next blog.
